"Growing good food, and people"
Kirk Rose
Kirk began as a volunteer with Left Foot, and as of December 2009 is leading the Volunteer Program. In his own words,
I grew up in the tall-corn country of the state of Iowa's Great Northwest (well, the Northwest Corner of the state...it has it's own unique majesty, I promise you). Growing up, I looked forward to Thanksgiving when my aunts, uncles, gramma, granpa, brother, cousins, sister, and anyone else who cared to be associated with us would play a rousing game of turkeyandpie-full belly football. My family has a century farm in Iowa, meaning it has been under the Ackerman name for over 100 years (over 125 now actually!). I have a brother Kyle who lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and a sister Kalli, who lives in my hometown of Spencer, Iowa. I went to school at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. Looking back, I think I decided to go there largely because the Mississippi River flowed almost through the campus. Service became a big part of my life at UST and changed my life dramatically. I had the opportunity to travel and serve unique populations around the world through my job as the VISION program's Student Director. This took me from Alamosa, Colorado to Luang Prabang, Laos. I also played rugby in school for a "rag-tag bunch of dreamers" called the Blue Ox. I landed in Olympia when my partner, Kate took a job with the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. We roadtripped across the country in 4 days so she could start her first day on time! On our first day in Olympia, our fellow road warrior, my chocolate lab Muddy was lost at the Olympia library, only to be found 5 hrs. later sunbathing in the park - apparently he was really sick of the car!
I am very happy to be in Olympia. The state of Washington has treated me warmly thus far (except for the recent cold spell - I swear the Minnesota winters are not being missed by this guy). I hope to meet you all and would love to set up some time for you to get to know us better out on the farm!
